Choosing to get dentures is an important decision, not to be taken lightly. When you visit Premier Dentists in Sherman TX, Dr. Sam will perform a comprehensive evaluation and clearly explain your options. He will take the time to understand what your vision of an ideal smile is, and discuss your questions and concerns. Dr. Sam will help you choose the best treatment plan to bring out the best in your smile.

For good denture candidates there are three common options:

  • “Same Day” Dentures
  • “Healing” or “Immediate” Dentures
  •  Custom Dentures

Same Day Dentures *

This is an extremely expedited process, aimed at providing a low cost option for some patient. In a single day, impressions are taken and the appliance is readied. Most dental practices offering this option have a small, in-house laboratory. Any existing teeth are then pulled, and the denture put in place. Bypassing repeated adjustments and alterations keeps the price low, and eliminates the need for additional preparation visits.

Many patients express interest in this method due to the simplicity and apparent economy. However, the rushed process can lead to a lower quality denture. The one day turnaround time does not leave time for precision fitting, or changes to coloring or aesthetic styling. Instead, generic denture ‘blanks” in a variety of sizes is kept on hand.  These are minimally contoured and shaped for the patients’ mouths.

Each human mouth and gum is as distinct as a fingerprint – it varies widely from “the norm” in width, height, contour, gum color and so forth. Same-day dentures, using generic denture forms and contouring them minimally, have a predictable negative result on fit and comfort. This type of denture has the lowest patient satisfaction rating, and they are often replaced within 3-6 months.

* Our goal is for every patient to be not only satisfied but delighted with their results. As a knowledgeable dentist and an experienced periodontal expert, Dr. Sam understands each patient is unique, and quality care cannot be rushed.  Because the performance, fit, and appearance of same-day dentures is so often below par, we do not offer same-day dentures in our practice.

Immediate or “Healing” Dentures Sherman TX

custom dentures sherman txMany people confuse Immediate “Healing” dentures and “Same-Day” dentures. There are notable differences however. Immediate dentures are not rush-fabricated in a day! An additional day for impressions of the patients mouth is required, and, they are carefully fabricated for each patient using premium materials.  The appliances are specially fabricated, with all of the fittings and adjustments required for the perfect look and feel. Multiple visits are needed to achieve this.

After your initial examination, your next visit will be for dental impressions. Using a highly advanced technique, Dr. Sam will take a precision impression of your mouth, with existing teeth still in place. Your dentures will be fabricated using this impression, at a state-of-the art dental laboratory. If they happen to have any imperfections, or the coloring is not a perfect match for your complexion, they are altered as necessary. Only when your new dentures are perfect, does the process continue.

Immediate Dentures Are Immediately Placed
What makes these dentures “immediate” is the fact that all existing teeth are pulled in the same day, and the appliance is immediately placed. What makes these dentures “healing” is that the appliance helps curb bleeding and swelling immediately after extractions.

This method has advantages and disadvantages. The primary benefit in choosing this option is avoiding weeks of being without teeth before the dentures are placed. It also helps curb bleeding and swelling immediately after extractions, with the appliance acting as a bandage.

As initial swelling dissipates, the gums naturally change shape with healing.  This natural evolution in the shape of the mouth can be accommodated by “re-lining” the healing denture where in contacts the gums. Typically immediate dentures are “re-lined” a few months after the initial placement.

Custom Dentures – Massad™ Denture Technique

Custom dentures provide optimal fit and lasting function. The appliances are custom crafted to the exact form of your gums, allowing for the most exact fit and therefore the highest degree of comfort. They are a pricier than “immediate” dentures though they require fewer follow-up visits.

Unlike immediate or same day dentures, the impressions are not the first step. Instead, all existing teeth are pulled, and your mouth is given time to heal. There will be a period of several weeks between the extractions and the final appliance. Difficulty with tasks such as eating and speaking without teeth proves to be an unbearable inconvenience for many patients. However, this is the only way of shaping dentures exactly to your gums.

After you gums have healed, and swelling has receded you will be ready for your impressions. Dr. Sam will use the same detail-accurate Massad™ Impression Technique* that he uses for immediate dentures. This is the most accurate method available, molding precisely to the subtle nuances of your gum-line. Because your gums have finished healing and reshaping, the landscape in your mouth is not likely to change. Custom dentures can provide a perfect glove-like fit that can last a lifetime.
